If you’re planning to cut your own Christmas tree this year, you'll soon be able to go to Land Between the Lakes and harvest a free cedar tree.

A permit will soon be available online that allows you to cut down a cedar between Nov. 29 and Dec. 24. The application for the permit will become available on Sunday, Nov. 24 on the LBL reservations website .

Once again this year, each family will be allowed to cut one cedar tree anywhere in LBL except:

- within sight of US 68 or KY 80
- along Woodlands Trace scenic byway
- in cemeteries, campgrounds or nature watch areas
- the Elk and Bison Prairie
- other mowed areas

Trees must be cedar and less than ten feet tall. Stumps must be less than 4 inches tall. Chainsaws may be used, but using trucks, winches, tractors or other heavy equipment is prohibited.
