Water covering US 60 in Crittenden County has begun to retreat, according to crews monitoring the situation.

Union County Emergency Management posted photos Tuesday morning showing the water retreating from the pavement, leaving debris on the roadway.

The movement comes as the Ohio River at Shawneetown crested on Monday evening at 53.33 feet, just above major flood stage.

Since then, the river has receded to 52.9 feet on Tuesday evening. It is forecast to fall below 52 feet on Wednesday afternoon, and below 51 feet on Thursday morning.

This will allow water in the Tradewater River to flow into the Ohio, and off of US 60 over the next few days.

However, traffic will not be allowed to cross until the water recedes and any safety concerns are addressed, including inspection of the undersides of the Tradewater bridge and supports.

Highway and emergency crews appreciate the patience and cooperation of affected residents during this time.
