A teenager in Metropolis was charged with reckless driving and fleeing from authorities while officers were responding to separate incident on Saturday.
Metropolis police officers and Massac County Sheriff deputies were responding to a call for assistance from a Brookport Officer. While responding with emergency lights activated, a pick up truck reportedly pulled in front of a Metropolis officer from the I-24 ramp to US 45.
Police said the truck appeared to yield then sharply accelerated and cut in front of the squad, reaching speeds in excess of 105 mph in the rain. The vehicle at one-point lost control drove off the roadway and then into oncoming lanes. The vehicle continued onto Brookport with the officers still behind him. In the meantime, the Brookport incident was secured. The vehicle ended up crashing in Brookport.
The 17-year-old driver of the truck was taken into custody. He was charged with reckless driving, failure to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle and aggravated fleeing and eluding. He was released to his mother on a notice to appear.
