The Kuttawa Volunteer Fire Department spent the entire day Wednesday dealing with a hay bale fire that smoldered for about 17 hours due to high winds.
First response to the fire was at 6:30 a.m. on KY 819 in Lyon County. Fire crews initially cleared the scene sometime after noon, but crews had to return after 3 p.m. because strong winds shifted direction and the hay bales were still smoldering.
The Eddyville Fire Department and Princeton Fire Department also assisted to regain control, and local tractors operated by the landowner and P&H Farms helped remove the hay bales to a nearby gravel lot.
According to the Kuttawa Volunteer Fire Department, smoke from the bales made it hard for drivers to see for much of the day.
Fire crews continued to deal with the smoldering bales well after the sun went down. They posted that all fire units cleared the scene at 11 p.m.
