A pair of small earthquakes were detected in our region on Saturday.
The United States Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 2.5 quake was recorded at 11:03 a.m. in Hopkins County, Kentucky, 5 miles north of Nebo, midway between Lake Barkley and Owensboro.
This is the third quake in a week in the Madisonville area, after 2.5 and 3.0 tremors occurred less than 20 miles away on Monday, May 29.
About an hour earlier on Saturday, a 2.8 magnitude quake happened near Ridgley, Tennessee south of Reelfoot Lake.
The area surrounding Ridgley has been a hotbed for minor tremors this year, including 12 in the past 30 days, and 4 in the past week in a one-mile wide area southeast of town.
