The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 16 at Henderson has been requested by the Owensboro Police Department (OPD) to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred within the city limits of Owensboro during the past weekend.

The KSP says Post 16 was contacted just after 4:00 a.m. (CT) on Saturday December 21, regarding the incident in the 500 block of Orchard Street. Troopers and detectives responded to the location to begin processing the scene.

The preliminary findings of the investigation indicate several OPD officers responded to a 911 call of a disturbance. During the encounter, a male individual at the residence had a knife and was threatening officers and others in the house. Multiple OPD officers fired their agency-issued firearm, striking the suspect. The man sustained life-threatening injuries and life-saving measures were performed on-scene. He was transported to Owensboro Health ICU, where he was last listed in critical but stable condition. His name has not yet been released. No other injuries have been reported.

Owensboro Police are continuing their investigation of the disturbance/domestic violence call that led to the shooting, while KSP troopers are investigating the officer-involved shooting itself. The names of the OPD officers who were involved in the shooting have not been made public at this time.

Kentucky State Police have statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the state as requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.

KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. However, to protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered. Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case.
