A single-vehicle crash in Hickman County on Tuesday has claimed the life of Michael B. Stacy, the Commonwealth's Attorney for the 1st Judicial Circuit serving Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton, and Hickman Counties.

Kentucky State Police are investigating the crash that happened at about 3:20 p.m. along US 51 in Clinton. Troopers said that a vehicle driven by the 68-year-old Stacy of Kevil, for reasons yet undetermined, left the northbound side of US 51 and collided with a tree. Stacy was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the vehicle with him was 30-year-old Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Michael "Beau" Stacy of Cunningham. The younger Stacy was flown by Air Evac to an out-of-state hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman issued a statement late Tuesday praising the work Stacy did on behalf of the River Counties.

Coleman said, "Mike Stacy is exactly who you wanted in a courtroom standing up for Kentuckians. As a prosecutor, he was tough, but fair. And as a public servant, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the families he served."

The Attorney General spoke of the personal loss, having worked directly with both men, "I'm devastated by his sudden loss in a motor vehicle accident today. We are praying for his son and our fellow colleague, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Beau Stacy, who was also involved in the accident. Our sincere condolences are with the Stacy family during this tragic time."

KSP said both men were wearing seatbelts. The crash remains under investigation.

Full statement:

Attorney General Russell Coleman issued the following statement on the passing of Commonwealth's Attorney Michael Stacy of the 1st Judicial Circuit (Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton and Hickman Counties):

"Mike Stacy is exactly who you wanted in a courtroom standing up for Kentuckians. As a prosecutor, he was tough, but fair. And as a public servant, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the families he served.

Mike's fellow Commonwealth's Attorneys elected him to lead their statewide association, and he had the rare distinction of receiving the top awards for both County and Commonwealth's Attorneys during his many years of service to the River Counties.

I had the privilege to work with Mike throughout the years, and I'm devastated by his sudden loss in a motor vehicle accident today. We are praying for his son and our fellow colleague, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Beau Stacy, who was also involved in the accident. Our sincere condolences are with the Stacy family during this tragic time."
