An incident at a high school baseball game between Lyon County and Graves County on Saturday remains under investigation.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called just before 4 p.m. to Lee S. Jones Park for a report of a disturbance. Lyon County EMS was also called to the same location to treat a 14-year-old male that had been struck in the mouth.
Deputies said that Graves County Coach Josh Byrd got upset with a call by one of the game's umpires. Allegedly, Byrd threw a weighted bat sleeve in frustration, which ended up striking a 14-year-old player in the Graves County dugout.
Lyon County EMS treated the juvenile after he was struck in the face with the bat sleeve. They transported the male to Baptist Health in Paducah for further treatment.
The report also stated that there was a disturbance between coaches and fans after the game. Deputies took statements and obtained video of the incident, and it remains under investigation.
Graves County Superintendent Matthew Madding told West Kentucky Star that they are investigating the incident, as well. Madding said that Byrd has been placed on leave pending the results of the investigation.
Madding's full statement:
"We are investigating the incident that happened Saturday. Coach Byrd has been placed on leave pending the investigation results. Since this is an ongoing investigation, we won't have further comment at this time."
