A man and woman were arrested on warrants and other charges after they fled from Metropolis Police.

Officers spotted 30-year-old Austin C. Burnham of Metropolis as he got in a vehicle outside the Marathon on 12th Street. They asked him to get back out as they were aware he was wanted for theft and violating a protective order. Instead, Burnham rolled up his window and the driver allegedly took off, causing other drivers to stop suddenly to avoid a crash.

Police pursued the vehicle reportedly driven by Chelsea B. Emery of Henderson, Kentucky. Emery allegedly led officers the wrong way down Catherine Street past Metropolis Elementary. Students were said to be on the playground at the time. She stopped the car near 11th Street and Burnham took off on foot. He was arrested a few blocks away.

Burnham was charged with resisting arrest in addition to the warrants for failure to appear on theft and protection order violations.

Emery was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, reckless driving, and concealing or aiding a fugitive.
