Family, friends and local officials gathered Saturday in Dawson Springs to unveil a memorial to the community's 19 victims of the December 10th tornado.
The granite monument in the back of the city park was created by the Dawson Springs Rotary Club, with the names of each who perished on one side, the other etched with an American flag and the Lord Byron quote, "Adversity is the path to truth."
A bell tolled at the reading of the name of each victim.
The monument was installed at the top of a hill next to the concrete slab of the Rotary Club pavilion that was destroyed in the storm. The club plans to rebuild the pavilion next to the memorial.
Planters Bank partnered in the project with fundraising and provided benches around the site. The Princeton Rotary Club also assisted with raising funds.
Local officials spoke at the unveiling, and a recorded message from Governor Beshear was played.
More work will be done on the grounds to prepare for a memorial ceremony on the anniversary of the tornado.
