Friday is National POW/MIA Recognition Day across the nation, a day to recognize and remember those who were prisoners of war or missing in action. However, that day of remembrance in McCracken County will be held this Saturday.
McCracken County Judge Executive Craig Clymer joined the Greg Dunker Show on Wednesday to discuss the planned ceremony and why the planned ceremony for the County is Saturday.
"The actual day it is celebrated across the nation is on the third Friday of September," Clymer said. " However, we did it before and we had less attendance then what we would like so we are going to try it on Saturday the day after the actual day thinking we will have better attendance for that."
The recognition day became official in 1998 with the passage of the Defense Authorization Act.
Clymer said this is a day and event he holds dear as they remember those who have served the country.
"Of course we all want to honor and hold up our veterans in the military service and of course who is more deserving than those who were prisoners of war or were or are still missing in action after having served our country," Clymer said. "So it is a special time to remember and reflect on the people who were willing to give up our personal lives for ours.
This Saturday's event will be held at 2pm at the McCracken County Courthouse on the corner of 6th and Washington Street.
Clymer said the event will feature the Paducah Tilghman high school ROTC, Troop 2200 Boy Scouts of America out of Broadway United Methodist Church, a retired Navy Commander, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Gaurd will shoot a rifle volley.
