An attempt to serve an arrest warrant on Friday led to a standoff and the arrest of two Mayfield men.
Mayfield police responded to a home and announced their presence. Authorities said 38-year-old Cortez Thornton answered, then fired a handgun at the two officers before slamming the door shut.
As officers took cover, 40-year-old Tario Curtis reportedly fled out the back door but was apprehended shortly after. Officers said a search of his person uncovered illegal drugs and a large amount of cash.
Authorities secured the perimeter before asking Thornton to surrender and leave the home. After a few minutes, Thornton called 911 and told dispatchers he would surrender, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
A search of the home allegedly uncovered a firearm, illegal drugs, and counterfeit money.
Thornton was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, receiving stolen property, trafficking in marijuana, trafficking in cocaine, tampering with evidence, possession of a forged instrument, and other charges.
Curtis was charged with fleeing or evading and trafficking in meth, cocaine, and marijuana.
They were taken to the Graves County Jail.
