First Christian Church of Mayfield on Sunday officially broke ground for a new church building to replace the one destroyed by the 2021 tornado that wiped out much of the city’s core.
The church held the celebratory ground-breaking at the corner of Ninth and South Streets where local residents had worshipped in the old building starting in 1908.
“This is the day we have worked, hoped and prayed for a long time,” said Jim Heath, Building Committee Chair. “God has brought us this far. We trust him to lead us forward.”
The new 18,000-foot structure will cost about $7 million. Construction is expected to be completed by late summer of 2025.
The building is fully funded by insurance proceeds, a major contribution from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and donations from organizations and individuals from around the country.
“So many people who have their own struggles have reached out to help us in our struggles and we’re thankful,” said Bridge Minister the Rev. Dr. Rick Loader.
“We ask for your continued prayers as we respond to these acts of love as we reach out to others to help them.”
