On the day after Fort Campbell Army Base unveiled its memorial to soldiers killed in a 2023 helicopter collision, ground was broken Friday on a separate memorial in Trigg County near the site of the crash.

Families of the nine 101st Airborne personnel took shovels alongside local officials and began the journey of creating a permanent memorial, one year to the day after two Blackhawk medivac helicopters collided during a night time training mission.

Colonel Clint Cody, the 101st Airborne Division Combat Aviation Brigade Commander, spoke to the gathering on the day after he addressed hundreds at the Fort Campbell ceremony. He spoke of how important it was to the soldiers at the base to receive such unflagging support from surrounding communities.

WPKY reported that the memorial and garden will be located on a triangle-shaped plot adjacent to Vinson Cemetery just off US 68/80 west of Cadiz, less than a mile from the crash site.

Trigg County Judge-Executive Stan Humphries said that a committee will convene soon to lay out the details of the future memorial.
