As Graves County continues to work out funding for a new jail, the Graves County Fiscal Court announced on Friday that an agreement has been made to house some county jail inmates at the Christian County Jail.
People arrested by Graves County deputies will be booked into the McCracken County Detention Center and transported daily to the Hopkinsville facility by Christian County staff. That arrangement will keep Graves deputies safer by eliminating long transports.
Court appearances and medical appointments will also be handled by Christian County Jail staff.
State Class D inmates will continue to be housed at the Graves County Jail.
The fiscal court said fewer transports would mean that fewer employees would be required, but no current employees would be fired just because of the agreement. They said the reduction of staff would occur by attrition.
Graves County officials said the future savings are estimated to be hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. That money can be utilized instead by the county for infrastructure, law enforcement, economic development and more.
