The owners of Crittenden County's weekly newspaper are the winners of a statewide award for public service through community journalism.

Chris Evans and Allison Mick-Evans operate the Crittenden Press in Marion. They were chosen this year for the Al Smith Award for public service by the Institute for Rural Journalism, part of the University of Kentucky School of Journalism and Media.

The Bluegrass chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists also present the award. Chapter president Tom Martin said, "The Press is the embodiment of a vital community newspaper."

Especially noted was the newspaper's coverage of Marion's water crisis this spring and summer, with coverage of the levee breach, emergency actions, council meetings and timely instructions for residents to find and conserve water.

The Evans will be honored in November at the Al Smith Awards dinner in Lexington.
