Tokai Carbon GE of Hickman has won a Governor's Safety and Health Award from Gov. Andy Beshear.
For more than eight straight years, employees at the Fulton County graphite electrode manufacturing
facility logged some 887,028 consecutive hours on the job without a workplace injury or illness resulting in lost time.
Tokai vice-president of operations, Chris Harris, praised the commitment to safety of both the company and its employees in winning the award.
Tokai, headquartered in Japan,has operated since 1918 and is a world-wide leader among graphite electrode suppliers.
The company purchased the U.S.-based graphite electrode business in late 2017 to better serve the U.S. steel industry. Its corporate office is in Charlotte, North Carolina. Another plant is in Ozark, Arkansas. The Hickman facility has been in existence for more than 50 years and employs 78 people.
