The first visit by a major river cruise ship will take place today in Grand Rivers, with hopes for many more.
American Cruise Lines is scheduled to pull into port today at 12:30, and its passengers will have a 24-hour stopover to visit the town just steps away from the dock.
The city says Grand Rivers is being considered as a possible regular port of call for American Cruise Lines ships that travel the Kentucky Lake/Tennessee River waterway to Nashville from westward ports like Memphis and St. Louis.
That's thrilling news for residents and officials who have been dreaming and planning for such an arrangement for decades.
Twenty-eight years ago, Grand Rivers invested $70,000 in the construction of a 600-foot jetty on the lake at Lighthouse Landing specifically with cruise ships in mind.
