An adult and child escaped Tuesday from a van that was stalled on railroad tracks before it was hit by a train in southern Illinois, near Murphysboro.

According to WSIL, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office reports that a 39-year-old Murphysboro man was driving the van with a child passenger. He was reportedly not able to stop the van which struck some plowed snow on the edge of the roadway, stalling the vehicle.

The driver was able to get out, and also get the child out of the van, before it was struck by a train, at the North Seventh Street crossing, just north of Murphysboro.

The van was said to be significantly damaged, and authorities said there was minor damage also to the train.

The North Seventh Street crossing was closed until the crash scene could be cleared.
