Investigators have said that the explosion Monday at Lone Oak First Baptist Church was not related to ongoing work at the site.

Detectives with the McCracken County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Paducah Police Bomb Squad, an explosive-detecting K9 from Kentucky State Police, and the ATF, worked the scene for several hours. Witnesses and one of the victims spoke with investigators about what they saw and determined that it was not part of the ongoing construction at the church.

Investigators believe that the explosion was caused by what they describe as a "sparkler bomb" made by one of the men and inadvertently cut by another. The fireworks, which were not designed to be packaged in that fashion, exploded causing serious injuries.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Office said the explosion happened just after 12:30 p.m. Monday and 911 calls came in shortly after. Two men working with a construction crew on-site were hurt.

The two men received life-saving treatment from first responders and were taken by ambulance to a local hospital before being transferred out of state for further treatment.

The incident is still under investigation.
