Dozens of first responders, residents and well-wishers gathered Saturday for the second year to walk part of the path of the 2021 Mayfield tornado and reflect on lives and property lost, but also on the hope of a community rebuilding.
The city came together in the rain for a memorial walk from the old candle factory to the memorial at the old Graves County courthouse for the second year in a row, to share memories and support.
Along with local residents and Mayor Kathy O'Nan was Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who spoke at the memorial event and dedicated another five homes that were turned over to Mayfield tornado survivors. Afterward, Beshear visited Dawson Springs to hand over keys to five more completed homes.
This Sunday marks the two-year anniversary of the deadly long-track EF-4 tornadoes that claimed 81 lives in Kentucky, including 24 in Graves County. The storms caused billions of dollars in damage, with scars still all too visible in several rebuilding communities.
