Henderson, Shirley

Shirley Jean Shoulta Henderson November 25, 1930 November 16, 2019 She was born in a two story log home on Husbands Road in Paducah. The third of five children born to Richard and Hazel Staten Shoulta. She attended mass from the time she was a young child at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on Broadway. Witnessing the lean years of the depression, and the aftermath of the 1937 flood that made them leave their home, made her appreciate the beauty of her church and the Irvan Cobb hotel next door. Many times she told of excusing herself from church to use the indoor plumbing next door, just to take in the opulence of the hotel. As a young girl, she attended Farley Elementary and went on to graduate from Reidland High School in 1952. She went to Draughon's Business College in Paducah but left to take a job at the shoe factory in Paducah. The job paid well for young women, and she and her girlfriends spent lunch times shopping the stores up and down Broadway for the latest fashion. It's no wonder she caught the eye of Earl Henderson of Benton. He was tall, attractive, and well dressed himself and was back from his active service in Korea. They met by chance at the Southside Drive In at the foot of Husbands Road, where he asked for her phone number. On June 29, 1956, they wed. Their marriage lasted 63 years and one month until her beloved Earl died. As newlyweds, they followed Earls job with the railroad to Covington, Kentucky, and Birmingham, Alabama. They enjoyed the travel, adventure, and new friends until they settled back in Marshall County when they were expecting their only child, Kimberly Ann. Shirley stayed home while Earl went to work at Airco in Calvert City. They joined the civic clubs, the Jaycees and Jaycettes, to work for their community. Shirley held a number of jobs in Benton through the years, such as Sears, running the Montgomery Ward Catalogue Agency, and the Gold Gallery. But she always preferring to be home with family. When their daughter married Marty Lampert, and their grandkids, Ross and Rachelle, came along, they were an active part in the children's lives. Also, during this time, they purchased a 1932 Ford Coupe and joined the River Tin Street Rodder club. They had the time of their lives going to shows, helping to produce an annual car show for charity, and enjoying their friends. As years passed, the two grandkids grew up, married, and they were able to enjoy their 5 great grandkids. Life was rich for Shirley and Earl both. Mama's legacy was the happiness, joy, and smiles she brought to people. Her spirit made the world a brighter place. But three and a half months after Earl left her behind, God brought her home to join Him and Earl in heaven. We will miss her, but we know she's happier in heaven with dad. And we believe heaven just became a little bit brighter with her presence. Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father, Hazel and Richard Shoulta; her husband, Earl; and her brothers, Bill, Jim, and Roscoe. She is survived by her sister, June Kaufman of Paducah; Her daughter, Kimberly, and husband, Marty. Also survived by her grandson, Ross, and wife, Meaghan; her granddaughter, Rachelle, and her husband, Daniel. And 5 great grands.... Braydan, Millie, Quentin Lampert, and Aiden, and Annie Taylor.
