Mrs. Roberta Jeanne Mohlin Garfield passed away peacefully on May 5, 2024 at Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House in Murray, KY.

She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota but her family moved to Ogden, Utah in her early years. She is survived by her 1-month-old great grandson Theo, her grandson Chris (and Allie of Franklin, TN), her sisters Deanna Minnoch (and Jack of San Diego), Karen Mohlin (Cottonwood Heights, Utah) and Anna Stewart (Irvine, CA), her son Greg (and Sheila of Patterson, CA), her daughter Natalie (and Susan of MKY) and a whole bunch of nieces and nephews.

Roberta was preceded in death by her beloved husband and soul mate, Dr. Gene Jensen Garfield, her parents, Irving and Marion Mohlin and her brother-in-law, Robert Stewart.

Roberta met Gene in Ogden, Utah, and shortly thereafter, she told her sisters that he was the one she would marry. They said he was too cool for her, but sure enough, they married in Council Bluffs, Iowa on January 18,1960.

At five years old, Roberta knew she wanted to be a nurse and after high school, she went to St. Benedict’s School of Nursing in Ogden, Utah and graduated in 1960. There began her lifelong passion and career from working in hospitals, to teaching at Murray’s LPN school, to being a nurse practitioner at Murray State that turned into the Director of Student Health Services, where she retired in 2012. Roberta received both her Bachelor of Science (May 1981) and Master of Science (May 1986) in Nursing from Murray State University.

Her passions were serving others through her nursing career, advocating for others (most notably women’s rights) and supporting various causes throughout the community from the Arts and Theater to various groups at Murray State (most notably Taste of the Arts, WKMS and Murray State Women’s Athletics programs).

Roberta loved traveling (stateside and abroad), socializing with her friends and spending time with her family. The bond with her sisters was special beyond words. They always found time to travel together, visit each other and wore their ears out with many long phone conversations. Near and dear to her was also the time she had with her grandson Chris, both in person and with many phone calls and text messages.

Other notables. Seventeen trips to Maui. Countless times to Europe, Utah and California. And finally, the story Roberta always told…that she cried when Gene got tenure at Murray State. Roberta only wanted to live in Murray for two years in the 70s, but she finally admitted that decision turned into a lifetime journey that provided their dream careers, but even more important, a vast group of dear friends that she was forever grateful for. House parties, Derby parties, Halloween parties, New Year’s Eve parties, Birthday parties, MCC parties. Party, fun and joy! Her smile, her laugh, her joy and kindness will be forever missed.

Her family welcomes visitors from 12 pm until 2 pm on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at the Heritage Chapel of Imes Funeral Home, 1804 Highway 121 Bypass North, Murray.  A private, family burial will follow at Murray City Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in Roberta’s memory to Anna Mae Owen Residential Hospice House.
