Exploring the science of laser technology, discovering the world of dinosaurs and creating fantastic Lego contraptions are just a few ways local youth can learn the basics of science at West Kentucky Community and Technical College (WKCTC) beginning in December.
Children ages six to twelve can learn fun and exciting science concepts by attending Friday Night Science taught by Hooked on Science’s Jason Lindsey. This event will be held in December, February and April 2014.
The class schedule is as follows:
December 6 – Simple Machines Galore with Legos - Students will discover the science behind simple machines through observation, reasoning, prediction, and critical thinking using Lego Education’s simple machine set.
December 13 – Let It Snow! - Jason Lindsey aka “Mr. Science” will make it snow. Students will also explore the wonders of Instant Snow. When water is added to this granular white powder, it instantly expands to 40 times its original volume, producing a snow-like material.
February 7, 2014 – Building an Arch - Students will quickly discover how teamwork is important when building a six-foot arch. They will learn how the curve of an arch is such that blocks do not experience any shear or sideways forces, only forces that are alone or parallel to the line of the curve of blocks.
February 21 – LEGO Science - Students will spend the evening playing with more than 6,000 LEGOs. Kids will practice their speed building by creating their best LEGO contraptions and more. Each student will receive a “FREE” mini LEGO.
April 4 – Laser Pegs - Students will discover the science behind light. The national award winning “Laser Pegs” is the first construction toy set in the world in which each piece feeds the next piece low voltage current. Students can design and build anything they want with “Laser Pegs.”
April 11 – Mighty Magnets - From making magnets seem like they are floating in the air to determining if money is magnetic, students will learn all about magnetism through hands-on experiments.
April 18 – Dinosaur World - From excavating a Tyrannosaurs Rex to examining a “real” dinosaur egg, students will learn all about fossils through hands-on experiments.
Friday Night Science will be held at WKCTC’s Emerging Technology Center, room 140 from 5:00-7:00 pm each night. The cost is $20 for each class, which includes light snacks each evening. To register, call 270-534-3335 or go online at http://ws.kctcs.edu/westkentucky/category/category.aspx?C=&S=4.
