Students in Graves County now know when they'll officially start back to school

The Graves County Board of Education voted Monday night to stick with the original plan of starting in-person classes on Aug. 26.

Students that choose virtual instruction will also start on Aug. 26.

The board's vote was unanimous.

"It's not an easy thing to go against a recommendation from your governor," Superintendent Matt Madding said. "There were many factors that led to the decision to begin in-person instruction on Aug. 26. As both the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics point out, there are many benefits to students beginning in-person instruction including social/emotional wellness, nutrition, student safety, and overall quality of instruction.

"Our Board considered this along with feedback from our community, and our local health department to ultimately decide to stick with our original plan."

Earlier this month, GovBeshear announced a recommendation for Kentucky schools to postpone in-person classes until September 28 due to concern over the state's COVID-19 cases and positivity rate.
