West Kentucky Community and Technical College will host a reception to recognize the winners of the recent National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read Paducah creative writing contest. The Carson Center for the Performing Arts is sponsoring the NEA's Big Read short story/poem contest that was based on Ray Bradbury's critically-acclaimed book, Fahrenheit 451.

The hour-long reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held January 22 in WKCTC's Matheson Library Reading Room beginning at 11 am. Refreshments will be served.

Fahrenheit 451, first published in 1953, is often regarded as one of Bradbury's best works. The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found, and the effect this has on the main character and society.

The writing contest, which was a partnership between the Carson Center and WKCTC, was divided into four categories - ninth-twelfth graders and adults of all ages in both short story and poetry genres. Each contestant submitted an original poem or short story based on the opening and closing lines of Bradbury's book. A winner and runner up were selected from each category. Contest winners will be awarded gift cards and will read their winning entries during the January 22 reception.

For more information about the NEA Big Read, visit the Carson Center for the Performing Arts website or contact Josh Morehead, director of education and outreach, at 270-443-9932 x 235.

WKCTC will also host the finale to its 2019-2020 One Book Read of Nothing Like an Ocean by award-winning Kentucky author Jim Tomlinson, who will visit campus on March 17-18. Visit onebookread.com for author details and other One Book Read events leading up to Tomlinson's visit.
