Murray State University, already designated as “Military Friendly School” by G.I. Jobs, is now a “Yellow Ribbon School,” according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.

As a participant in the Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program for the 2012-13 school year, Murray State and the VA can now provide matching funds for a portion of established charges not covered by the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. Specifically for Murray State, this means that active duty military personnel will have their $30 application fee to attend the university waived.

Slone Cansler, director of the Murray State University Hopkinsville Regional Campus, explained that this is a particularly valuable benefit for many of the students attending there. Because of the close proximity to Fort Campbell, the Hopkinsville campus is host to a number of students with military backgrounds. Additionally, Murray State classes are held at Fort Campbell as well as in Hopkinsville.

“Murray State’s designation as a Yellow Ribbon School is exciting for those of us here at the Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell campuses. It makes a Murray State education even more accessible and affordable for our veterans and soldiers,” Cansler noted.

Dr. Brian Van Horn, dean of continuing education and academic outreach, said, “We’re very proud to serve the men and women of the military and this award recognizes our commitment to that service. We invite interested individuals to attend our Yellow Ribbon Celebration on June 5 from 11 am to 2 pm in the Army Education Center.”

Interested individuals across the region are invited to attend the celebration. MSU’s Yellow Ribbon program applies to active duty military personnel wishing to attend any of Murray State’s campuses, not just the Hopkinsville site.

During the celebration, the public can enjoy refreshments and learn more about Murray State programs offered in Hopkinsville and Fort Campbell, as well as at other sites. The Army Education Center is located at 202 Bastogne Avenue at Fort Campbell.

“We are so fortunate to have this recognition as a Yellow Ribbon institution,” said Alison Marshall, associate director, transfer center and veteran affairs. “It’s important to have as many avenues as possible for our soldiers to get the educational assistance they have earned and deserve.”
