The world’s largest operating steam locomotive is chugging its way through ten states this summer, with stops planned in southeast Missouri in September.

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 rode the rails from 1941 to 1961, hauling passengers and freight for over one million miles. In 2013, Union Pacific retained the locomotive from a California museum. After several years of restoration, it was returned to service in 2019.

During its whistle stops, history buffs and train aficionados can get an up-close look at the massive locomotive.

The train's Heartland of America Tour will make a 30-minute stop at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12 in DeSoto, Missouri. Then it'll run down the line to the Ironton/Arcadia Amtrak station for a 1:30 p.m. stop.

Big Boy will stop overnight in Poplar Bluff, but it will be closed to the public. It will depart by 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 13. on its way to Jonesboro, Arkansas.
