Months of engineering analysis and structural assessments show the U.S. Highway 60X “Singing Bridge” on Bridge Street in downtown Frankfort is unsafe, and the only option to keep the community connected is to replace the iconic Kentucky River crossing, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC).

Preliminary design for a replacement of the 132-year-old bridge, which has been closed to the public since August due to significant structural deterioration, is now under way.

“This bridge is a vital link that so many families in Frankfort depend on, and we are committed to maintaining that link for our people and businesses well into the future,” said Gov. Andy Beshear.

At Monday night’s Frankfort City Commission meeting, KYTC engineers outlined their work with multiple consultant firms and contractors since the closure, to evaluate the bridge’s condition and explore options. Analysis has confirmed that the safest and only option to maintain downtown Frankfort’s river crossing is to remove the existing structure and build a new one.

“For decades, Transportation Cabinet engineers have worked to safeguard the Singing Bridge through detailed oversight and maintenance, and we’re not stopping now,” Transportation Secretary Jim Gray stated. “Our goal is to find a way forward that serves the public need while honoring the longstanding service of this historic bridge.”

Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson noted, “The Singing Bridge is a beloved Frankfort landmark, a part of our identity, and a vital connection between two key parts of our city. We recognize the necessity of replacement and the significance this moment holds for our community. We are committed to partnering with KYTC to ensure that what comes next honors the bridge’s legacy and stands as a structure of lasting significance for generations to come.”

Since its closure, engineers from KYTC have conducted additional inspections and structural testing to guide the decision-making process for the bridge’s future. Their findings:

--The bridge is currently not safe to open for any purpose, including pedestrian traffic.

--The steel beams of the bridge are too deteriorated to continue routine maintenance.

--As a vital link in Frankfort’s downtown transportation network, the closure of the bridge creates hardships for travelers. The nearest detour is a half-mile away, adding significant distance for pedestrians.

--Repairs are not feasible. A new replacement bridge with sidewalks at the existing river crossing best meets project goals.

The "Singing Bridge" in Frankfort has been deemed unsafe and will have to be replaced.
