Six researchers from the University of Kentucky will play a leading role in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission.
The Genesis Mission is an effort led by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), to use artificial intelligence (AI) to help scientists make discoveries faster. According to the DOE, it aims to connect powerful supercomputers, scientific instruments, research databases and AI tools into one large platform so researchers can solve difficult problems more quickly.
The two principal investigators from UK are Sean Bailey with the College of Engineering and Chad Risko from the College of Arts and Sciences.
Four co-investigators were also named: Savio Poovathingal with UK’s College of Engineering and Erin Peters, Renee Fatemi and Wolfgang Korsch, all three of whom are part of the College of Arts and Sciences.
“The selection of our researchers for this national mission demonstrates the University of Kentucky’s role as a leader in solving the most pressing challenges facing our Commonwealth and our country,” said UK President Eli Capilouto. “By harnessing these new, powerful tools, we are advancing the boundaries of science and ensuring that Kentucky remains at the forefront of what might be the most rapid period of innovation in human history.”
According to the DOE, the Genesis Mission will allow for large-scale model training and autonomous experimentation that was previously impossible.
