Four people were on board a private plane that crashed Saturday morning in central Illinois.
According to Illiois State Police, the crash occurred on a county road and into a field in Trilla between Coles and Cumberland Counties at approximately 10:15 a.m. The location is three miles south of Mattoon and just southwest of Coles County Memorial Airport.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, four people were on board the Cessna 180. The aircraft came down due to as yet unknown reasons. It tore through power transmission lines after which it smashed into a local road where it cartwheeled and disintegrated ending up in a farm field.
State Police said the roadway is completely shut down. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be on site on Sunday to document the scene and examine the aircraft.
