Kentucky State Police (KSP) at Post 16 in Henderson are warning the public about a scam in which criminals trying to get your money are posing as funeral home representatives.

Victims report receiving unsolicited texts claiming to be a funeral home representative (using a real person’s name who is associated with the facility), demanding payment for services immediately.

These messages are fraudulent, according to the KSP. Funeral homes do not request or process payments through text messaging. Scammers are using fear and sensitive circumstances to pressure individuals into sending money or disclosing financial information.

Kentucky State Troopers recommend the following to protect yourself from this scam:

--Do not respond to unexpected texts requesting payment.

--If you should receive such a suspicious text message, contact the funeral home directly using a verified phone number, not one that is included in the text.

--Never share personal or financial information during a text message exchange with unknown numbers.

--Report any suspicious messages to local law enforcement, as well as the Office of the Kentucky Attorney General - Consumer Protection Division at 502-696-5389 or 888-432-9257.

The KSP is also urging residents to share this information with their family, friends and especially older community members, who may be more vulnerable to such schemes.
