The crash occurred north of Du Quoin in Perry County on US 51. The crash involved a school bus from St. Bruno Catholic School.
Illinois State Police said that a truck with a flatbed trailer was waiting to turn off of the highway when the school bus hit the truck from behind.
Four students were taken to an area hospital with injuries. The school bus driver was flown from the scene.
State troopers said 11 other students were uninjured, as well as the truck driver.
Troopers closed US 51 for an extended period for the investigation.
