The $2.2 billion project is in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit, to be dedicated exclusively to powering mission-essential operations on the base.
The microreactor will occupy a footprint of less than 5 acres, entirely on post. This will allow the installation’s national security assets to function independently from the commercial power grid during severe weather events, cyber disruptions, or regional blackouts.
Fort Campbell will be working with BWX Technologies to deploy a smaller, single 20-megawatt version of its BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor. Design phases will begin immediately, with groundbreaking projected for late 2028 and the reactor to go online in the early 2030s.
The other four Army bases who will partner with four other nuclear reactor system builders include Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Benning, Georgia; and Fort Drum, New York.
