Governor Andy Beshear has vetoed a controversial bill from this legislative session.
The governor vetoed SB 83, which bans transgender girls from playing on sports teams that match their gender identity. It applies to girls in the sixth grade to college.
Governor Beshear cited the Kentucky High School Athletics Association's policies on transgender student-athletes, adding that the sporting association strives to "create an environment free from discrimination and provide an equal opportunity for participation in athletics in accordance with applicable state and federal laws."
Beshear is set to hold a Team KY update Thursday.
