Republicans in Illinois once again chose former state Sen. Darren Bailey as their candidate for the November governor's race.

Bailey, a farmer from southern Illinois near Centralia, carried 53.5 percent of the vote in the four-person raceTuesday. The nearest competitor garnered 28 percent.

Four years ago, Bailey won the nomination with 57 percent of the vote, but lost the general election, 55 to 42 percent.

In 2024, he tried to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Bost in the 12th District, narrowly losing that primary by less than 3,000 votes.

Although President Trump did not formally endorse him, Bailey asserts that he would model his administration after the current president.
