Work along US 51 Cairo bridge to pause during winter weather

A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will temporarily pause a work zone along the US 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge between Wickliffe and Cairo, IL, after dark Monday evening due to two approaching winter weather systems.

The National Weather Service is anticipating counties along and north of the Ohio River could see a mix of rain and snow overnight and into Tuesday afternoon, then Wednesday. 

While warmer ground temperatures may limit overall accumulation on roads, motorists should be pepared for slick or slushy roads, especially in southern Illinois.

Flooding is possible in some areas with even more rainfall in the forecast throughout the coming weekend.

With the work zone paused, the temporary traffic signal will be removed and the road will be open to both lanes.
