Two people were indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury accusing them of the theft of vehicles from Fort Campbell.
The grand jury returned indictments against 20-year-old Daniel Lee Clark and 57-year-old Joseph Pewitt in the case. Court documents indicate that Clark was a civilian resident of the Fort Campbell Army Installation and claimed to work for the post housing authority. Clark said he was tasked with removing and disposing of vehicles. He allegedly sold over 20 vehicles to the Guthrie Scrap Yard, owned by Pewitt.
Clark was reportedly taking vehicles marked for impound by Fort Campbell Police and had them towed to the scrap yard and sold them to Pewitt. Clark was not employed by the housing authority and was in no way authorized to remove or sell the vehicles, most of which were crushed.
The indictment indicated that Pewitt heard from one of his drivers that the Army was investigating vehicles that had been stolen. They allege that Pewitt had an employee create invoices for the vehicles he had purchased from Clark. Pewitt reportedly gave those created invoices to investigators and made false statements to the FBI.
Clark is facing a maximum of 20 years in prison, if convicted. Pewitt would face a maximum of 10 years.
The FBI and the Fort Campbell Provost Marshal’s Office are continuing to investigate.
