According to a post from Washington County, Illinois Emergency Management, the dam at Nashville, Illinois is expected to fail. The dam has already been overtopped by flood waters, and a secondary failure is causing problems throughout the area. An evacuation order has been issued for at least 300 fo the town's residents near the dam.
There were no reports of injuries in the community of 3,000 and the rest of the town was not in imminent danger of flooding from the dam break, but flash flooding on many other roads created worries about water rescues.
The National Weather Service said 5-7 inches of rain fell over an eight-hour period. Additional heavy rain was in the forecast with a line of more intense storms training from St. Louis this afternoon. Many roads have been closed by standing water across the St. Louis East metro.
The Red Cross has been activated and a community shelter has been opened in Nashville.
