Southern Illinois' famous Snake Road will be closed for a couple more weeks.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources closes the roadway twice a year to help with safe crossing for dozens of species of snakes and amphibians in the Shawnee National Forest who migrate from the limestone bluffs to LaRue Swamp and back again.
The 2.5-mile-long road was originally scheduled to be closed from through October 30, but unseasonably warm weather is still in the forecast. The road closure has been extended to November 15 to continue protection of the reptiles and amphibians during the fall migration.
Even though the road is closed to vehicles, it is open to visitors traveling on foot.
Special regulations apply to the area. Click here to find out more about visiting Snake Road.
