KYTC traffic engineers have studied 8 years of crash data to confirm that the Restricted Crossing U-Turn built at US 68 and Kentucky 139 in Trigg County has reduced accidents by more than half.

The RCUT intersection near Cadiz was among the first of its kind in the state, going into service in November of 2020.

Analysis of four years of data before RCUT construction shows 16 crashes, seven injuries and two 2 fatalities. There was an additional fatal crash immediately before construction started.

Crash data for the RCUT  from after it opened through 2024 has found six crashes, two injuries and no fatalities.

KYTC engineer Kyle Poat said, “If you do the math, police crash reports show we’ve had a 65 percent decrease in total crashes since the RCUT was completed and a 71 percent drop in injuries. The greatest success is that no lives have been lost since the RCUT opened.”

Since the Cadiz intersection was put into service, other RCUTs have also been constructed in western Kentucky. Plans for several roundabouts are also in the works statewide, and in District 1.
