A Paducah man was charged with assault of a police officer during a traffic stop in Mayfield on Friday.

A Graves County deputy stopped a vehicle that was reported to be driving erratically on US 45 north of Mayfield. A computer check showed that the driver, 39-year-old Daniel Shannon, had a suspended license.

A strong odor of marijuana was reported by the deputy. When Shannon was asked to exit the vehicle, the deputy said Shannon refused, and attempted to flee by placing the vehicle in gear.

During a struggle, Shannon was tased to gain control and take the driver into custody.

A search of the vehicle reportedly found quantities of crystal meth, along with about a pound of processed marijuana.

Shannon was charged with assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and trafficking in meth and marijuana.

He was transported to an out-of-county jail.
