Severe storms pounded western Kentucky overnight with large hail, along with at least one report of a brief tornado touchdown in southern Illinois.
The National Weather Service in Paducah received a report at 2 a.m. that a tornado touched down near Interstate 57 at Mounds in Pulaski County. No reports of damage have been received so far.
Western Kentucky had widespread reports of hail up to golf ball size, including in Reidland, Marion and Marshall County. Caldwell County checked in with one inch hail.
The hail was imbedded in severe thunderstorms with winds indicated by radar at 60 miles per hour, and torrential rain.
Hail of various sizes briefly covered the ground at mile marker 17 on I-24 near Reidland where a semi ran off the road during the storms.
Many low-lying roads became covered by water during the local downpours. Most have since cleared, but some may remain.
