An Oak Grove man has been indicted in connection with the thefts of military grave markers from two Hopkinsville cemeteries.

WKDZ reported a Christian County grand jury Friday indicted 52-year-old Robert Lafon of Oak Grove on 65 felony charges in connection with the thefts.  Lafon is accused of stealing the military markers from Cave Springs Cemetery and Riverside Cemetery between August 12th and August 18th.

Hopkinsville Police began their investigation  after discovering military grave markers missing from the cemeteries. Investigators later connected Lafon to the thefts after pieces of the markers were reportedly sold to a local scrap yard.

Lafon was charged with 31 counts of violating graves, 31 counts of first-degree criminal mischief, and three counts of theft involving property valued between $1,000 and $10,000.  Bond in the case was set at $20,000.

Local Veterans of Foreign Wars officials are hopeful the stolen markers, including those honoring World War II veterans, can be replaced.
