New heat index records set for September

On Friday, many locations in the quad state suffered through their highest ever heat index reading for a day in September.

The National Weather Service posted that Paducah reached a heat index of 110. That broke the record of 108 set in September of 1989.

Evansville's heat index of 108 Friday surpassed their September mark of 107 set in 1990.

Cape Girardeau had a heat index of 107, which eclipsed the previous September record of 105, set in 2013.

Carbondale tied 2023's mark of 106.

Some of those records could be challenged again today on the final day of our extreme heat warning. A slight chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms later this afternoon could begin to break the heat pattern going into Labor Day Monday, but another warmup is expected by the middle of next week.
