The Metropolis Fire Department posted this week that they have been selected as a recipient of a state grant to purchase new turnout gear for their crew.
The FY26 Small Equipment Grant from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal allows dozens of Illinois fire departments to upgrade safety and efficiency without affecting their local municipal budget.
Last year, 183 Illinois fire departments received up to $26,000 for a total of $4 million awarded. This year, $6 million was available.
Firefighter turnout gear is heavy-duty personal protective equipment engineered to shield firefighters from extreme heat, flames, and hazardous environments. It consists of specialized coats, pants, boots, helmets, flash hoods, and gloves.
The department received a similar grant in 2024.
