The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved $1,391,531 to the Commonwealth of Kentucky to help replace the Mayfield City Hall and the police department, which were destroyed by the 2021 tornado.

The old city hall building was built in 1970 and encompassed 12,000 square feet.

Last December, the Mayfield City Council approved preliminary plans for the new city hall consisting of more than 37,000 square feet to accomodate the half-century of expansion of city employees' functions and jobs.

The federal share for the project is 90 percent of the eligible costs, with the remaining non-federal share of 10% to be contributed by other sources.

The work is just part of Mayfield's massive rebuilding efforts. Plans for a new 18,000-square-foot fire station were also approved in December. Ground has also been broken on a new public works facility next to the old candle factory.
