The donation made on Sunday goes to the International Orthodox Christian Charities, who provides contractors to repair qualified homes in Marshall County, where 224 homes were destroyed by the 2021 tornado.
Stacey Mills, the Executive Assistant for the Marshall County Long Term Recovery Group, said there were still approximately 40 homes in Marshall County that were qualified to receive assistance. The affected homes are located in areas near Kentucky Lake, along Dove Lane and Benton-Briensburg Road.
Mills said Marshall County is still in need of volunteers to help repair homes, and help with debris removal is still very much needed in a lot of affected areas. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Mills at stacey.mills.mcltrg@gmail.com.
When recovery effort organizers realized the initial $2 million in funding would be running out at the end of 2023, they began the process of seeking additional funds. Ralph Young, who is a member of First Presbyterian Church in Paducah, made a grant application to Presbyterian Disaster Relief headquartered in Louisville. First Presbyterian Church in Calvert City also agreed to refit their church so it could become a PDA host site. Last year alone 16 different work groups came and stayed at the church to make home repairs.
The grant for $225,000 is the largest and first time they have pooled resources with other disaster recovery groups, including United Church of Christ, American Baptists, Brethren Disaster Ministries, and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
