Lone Oak Middle School was awarded a grant to implement a sustainability initiative thanks to an 8th grader's essay.
Grant Seaton, a student at Lone Oak Middle School, submitted an essay to The Week Junior magazine for a scholarship contest hosted by the Propane Education & Research Council, focused on promoting environmentally friendly practices at school.
The challenge Seaton took on required him to submit a drawing and essay about how he would make the school more sustainable.
Seaton designed a new outdoor learning space that included a garden, bird habitat, native plants, rainwater collection, and composting plan.
Thanks to Seaton's essay, Lone Oak Middle School will receive $2,000 from the Propane Education & Research Council to either implement his idea, or another sustainability initiative.
