An Illinois woman has been cited for 111 counts of inhumane treatment of animals in McCracken County.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office began investigating an alleged “puppy mill” on May 2.

The Sheriff's Office said they were notified there was a large number of dogs at the closed Reidland Veterinary Clinic in the 5000 block of Reidland Road.  Deputies arrived and were able to verify a large number of dogs were present and they appeared to be living in less than ideal conditions.

After obtaining a search warrant deputies said they found 124 dogs inside the building. In the majority of the building, there was no ventilation, no electricity, and no heating or air. Most of the dogs were said to be on carpet and congregating in feces and urine.

Detectives learned an Illinois woman, 66-year-old Suzanne Alt, was renting the building. After speaking with Alt, detectives also learned that she had been under investigation in Illinois related to these same dogs. Alt was cited to court for 111 counts of Inhumane Treatment of Animals.

The Sheriff's Office animal cruelty investigator is investigating the incident in conjunction with McCracken County Animal Control.
